World War One and Two were times of devastation and shock to the world. During these times, women became more involved, especially in the medical work. Nothing good came from war, but there was always love. Love was a cure for the soldiers who were sick, battling for their lives, and had no hope. For most of the soldiers there was always someone to come home to. A Farwell to Arms, a novel by Ernest Hemingway, portrays different elements of love than that of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, written by Louis de Bernieres, on the topics of personal experiences, differences in love during the war effort, abandonment, and games and divertissement.
Firstly, love stories may be based on personal experiences. A Farewell to Arms is an example of Hemingway's own wartime experience. He had an affair with an American Red Cross nurse seven years his senior, named Agnes von Kurowsky.
