By the time Arthur Miller began his work on The Crucible, he was already an accomplished playwright. Death of a Salesman (1949) had won him a Pulitzer Prize and transformed him into a national celebrity. In the 1950's, America was in the middle of her on "witch hunt". Senator Joseph McCarthy led several special congressional committees into controversial and highly publicized investigations intended to root out communist supporters in the United States. Like the characters in this play, to be accused was to be guilty; and many accused "cooperated" to save themselves through false confessions further fueling the hysteria that the U.S. was overrun with communists. The first performance of The Crucible took place in January of 1953, right in the middle of the communist "witch hunts". Although Miller denied it, many people perceived the play as an attack on McCarthyism. Miller himself admitted to the parallels of America in the 1950's and Salem of 1692...
