Kafka believes that the purpose of literature is to have an affect on the reader; to grasp the persons deepest feelings. As Kafka said himself, literature should "be an axe for the frozen sea inside of us." When Kafka writes pieces of literature, his goal is to grab the audience's attention by relating to peoples everyday lives. In "The Metamorphosis," Kafka takes a normal human and transforms his entire life. In the first sentence of the story, the main character, Gregor, wakes up and finds "himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect."
Before Gregor Sampson was transformed into an insect, he was like a robot. A perfect example of this would be that the first thing Gregor thought of when he woke up was that "the next train went at seven; to catch it he must hurry madly, and his collection of samples was not packed." The fact that he was a bug did not even affect him slightly because he was so focused on his job. He hated his job! The only reason he got up everyday and went to work was because he had to get "the money to pay off the parents' debt" and support his family...
