The title of the short story is " Everyday Use". A dirt Yard is something the characters in the story had to wake up and go to sleep to every day. When they went outside to play they played on a dirt yard. Dee may have been successful but she always has to face the fact that she is from a place where the front yard was a dirt yard. So the dirt yard basically stood for remembrance.
The first names in this story range from simple to complicated. Dee and Maggie are easy names that have been based down through the family by generations. Dee takes it to another level with her new name saying she is tired of having the name of those that oppressed her ancestors. She changed her name to Wangero to have an African heritage name. Hakim is another first name that has an African ties to it that is used in this story...
