With the completion of the human genome and the prospect of a complete mouse sequence the challenge is know to determine the human genome to aid in the analyzes of disease and pathogenesis. The mouse genetics enables us to investigate the role of genes in most of the physiological and biochemical pathways present are mammals. Therefore, one of the major focuses of the genetic community is to generate its phenotype. Therefore creating a mutant map of the mouse whereby every gene is related to some information regarding its function. Therefore the mutant map will aid in our understanding of the role of genes in mammalian development of disease and physiology. This mutant map can be created thru genotype driven mutagenesis with the use of gene trapping. In which the embryonic stem cells are carrying new insertional mutant in the genes. However, the problem with this gene driven approach is that some prior assumptions about the function of the gene under investigation must be made. However, it may be difficult to identify relevant phenotype features and some critical aspects of the mutant phenotype may be missed. In contrast the phenotype driven approach whereby new mutation are induced at random and new mutation recovered using appropriate phenotype screens...
