The small intestine
Adaptations to absorb food:
1. The intestine is very long
2. Villa increases surface area
3. Microvilli increases surface area further
Food is taken up by active uptake. This is diffusion against the concentration gradient. Food is pumped through the membrane using energy from respiration, from a region of low concentration to high.
Digestion in the Large Intestine:
Water and minerals are absorbed as the food slowly passes along the large intestine. Most of the water comes from digestive juices but if this is lost. (as in diarrhea) then dehydration and salt loss follows.
