Chemistry is made up of many interesting things. Molecules and atoms are all part of chemistry, but one interesting thing is acids and bases.
Early definitions of acids were based on observations. The first acids were characterized by Robert Boyle in 1680. The late definition of an acid is something with a sour or tart taste. Some scientists said that all acids contain oxygen, but not all acids contain oxygen. That theory was disproved in 1810 when Humphrey Davy showed that hydrochloric acid consists of only hydrogen and chlorine. He determined that acids contain hydrogen instead of oxygen.
Early definitions of a base were things that have observable properties. Bases were determined to have a slippery or soapy feeling...
