The reason why the title of the novelle is "Summer People" is because the suburbs to Sherringham in the summer-period is crowded with tourist from all over the world. They settle down at the beginning of July and leave at the end of August. In that period different kinds of people are settled down as "summer people". In the early summer the places are crowded with young people who party and do the things young people do. As the summer wains, the "summer people" are increasing in age, so that in August it is mostly old people who are settlers. It has to be mentioned that almost everyone of the tourists are richer and wealthier than any of the inhabitans of the town, which mostly consist of middle-class people who works real hard for their money. Thats why the town people hate the tourists so much, with their khaki shorts and such, but they still need them, because they put a large amount of cash in the town during the summer.
Julian live in the town, and he is like every teenager in America. He has to make decisions decisions that shurely will affect his future: Will he make the radical choice and try out a career as a painter, or will he be the ordinary working-class guy, who has to work his butt out everyday just to get money enough to atleast make a decent living? The choice is very hard to make because if you are different it means that you are like the "summer people" and they are slightly unpopular in the town...
