The Jungle
When I was first given the assignment to write about how a piece of literature made me feel I was boggled as to what I would write about. Of course throughout my education I have read countless novels, short stories, plays, and articles but I can not remember one of them making me feel a certain way, or affecting me what so ever. I thought it might be because I was simply reading these pieces to prepare for a test, and I was not reading them to better myself in any way. So I decided to take on a book that I was reading and make it a point to read the book for myself and not for a class. The book was The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Surprisingly many of the themes and issues in the book really touched me and some aspects even reminded me of my own life. The Jungle, for those who haven't had the pleasure of reading, is about a family in the early 20th century that comes to America from Lithuania seeking the stereotypical "American Dream". While here they encounter tragedy, success, and many hardships that I relate to.
In the book there is a character that works at a meat processing factory sweeping guts off the floor. It disgusted me to find out how meat was processed in the factories where they worked...
