In February-March 2003, IOM, with the support of the Government of Indonesia (GOI), commissioned an assessment of migration management in Indonesia. The assessment was carried out by a combined team of international experts together with officers of the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration. The objective of the assessment was to enhance the capacity of the GOI to manage migration, including its control systems and procedures. The assessment set out a number of recommendations which identified areas for development activity including the information technology requirements associated with:
• Travel Documents
• Check-Point Processing
• Black List Processing
• Information Technology Strategic Plan - SIMKIM
Stemming from the recommendations, IOM has established a Border Information Systems (BMIS) project for which this, the first phase, encompasses the completion of a systems design study which when implemented will assist the GOI to strengthen and enhance Indonesia’s migration management capacity through the increased use of computerized systems.
