AN IDEAL FATHER
In Pat Barker`s Regeneration all the major characters are men, and society values masculinity, and in a way this affects the fathers` perceptions regarding the future of their sons.
There is not an ideal father-son relationship in the novel when we look at the characters` family relations and the protagonists` memories of their fathers. Therefore some of those characters choose father figures from among the people around them. ... One of these fathers is Prior`s father. There is not a close relationship between Prior and his father. ...
An other father who is mentioned in the novel is Sassoon`s father. ... His father is a Jewish so his funeral is organised in a different way. ... Rivers asks him that “what difference would it have made , do you think, if your father had lived? ...
The third father is Rivers` father. Their relationship is also not an ideal one just like Prior`s and Sassoon`s relationships with their fathers. When Rivers is in his brother`s home where he recognises some of the furniture as being from their childhood home, involving a picture of his father hanging on the wall. This picture leads him to remember his father`s speech therapies with stammerers, including the young Rivers himself. He also remembers various ways in which he had rebelled against his father`s authority. ... He then realises the relationship between his and the father`s job. ... His father try to make young boys who are stammerers speak properly and Rivers try to make his patients who are soldiers fought on the battlefield speak and reveal their thoughts. The difference between them is the boys whom his father works with. ... The father is a very authoritarian man and he is not open to questions and changes, but Rivers is a more flexible man who treats his patients as if he was their friend. He is more moderate than his father. It could be said that Rivers tries to be the opposite of his father who was a very strict man by treating his patients with affection and patience.
