Throughout the book of Judges God calls upon "flawed" or imperfect people to lead or help the Israelites. Time and again the Israelites forsake God and break the covenant. Upon breaking the covenant their nation becomes chaotic and tumultuous; yet each time God calls upon one of these unsavory characters to bring peace to the people and reaffirm the covenant. God works through these characters and gives them power to restore faith into the Israelites and bring their nation together again.
God never breaks his covenant, he is loyal to the end; however, he is a selfish God. He even acknowledges this fact in the Ten Commandments. In Exodus 20:3-6 God tells the Israelites, "'You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD of your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation for those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.'"
