The Savage American
The book Great Plains, by Ian Frazier, is one in which the typical American is revealed. The typical American is one of great consumption. We like to soak and consume things like a sponge. History is one of those such things. Millions of tourists every year travel to various historical sites around the United States. In the novel, Frazier tells of some of his adventures in moving, traveling, and exploring the Great Plains area of the central United States. He shows us some encounters he has with actual Native American people. During these encounters, there are three people or places that are centered on that give focus to Frazier=s overall idea: Fort Union, Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. He shows us the mass deaths that occurred because of the smallpox epidemic that ravaged Fort Union in the early 1800's. He tells us the life of Sitting Bull, and how his life introduced many people to the Native American...
