Limiting High-Speed Pursuits
Throughout history there have been many police officers who were killed while on high-speed pursuits. One of the most dangerous activities that a police officer may participate in is pursuit driving. The big question to be asked is the person worth the pursuit or not. According to one police official, "It's a judgment call right off the top because you haven't the foggiest idea what's causing [the suspect] to run. Is it just a speeding ticket, or did that guy just rob a bank?"
When operating a vehicle at high speeds in a controlled environment it can be very dangerous. The danger can greatly escalate when having to deal with a fleeing suspect and the unsuspecting public. When a police officer is on a high-speed pursuit the officer main concern is the safety of all citizens and officers. There are two issues that come to an officers mind when dealing with a pursuit, whether to pursue followed by the decision to keep pursuing if the suspect continues to keep fleeing.
