The Kaiser Permanente Claims Administration Department processes medical claims for more than three million members that belong to the Southern California region. It is extremely important for the Claims department to be in contact with external medical providers as well as with internal medical centers and other departments within the organization. In order to be connected with all the required sources the Claims Department uses various different telecommunication systems.
One of the telecommunication system technologies widely used in the department are analog lines. The telephone uses analog lines to connect users in the company to outside providers; they are also used to communicate users with each other in the same department and in other departments. Not only are analog telephones used for voice communications but also to send and receive faxes. Another use for analog lines is to provide dial-in access to the network where a high-speed connection is not available.
In the department, in addition to analog lines for voice communications, digital cellular phones are also used to stay connected when an analog line is not available.
Probably, the most used telecommunication system is related to computer networks. In the Claims Department some of the computer technologies used include computer servers, T-1 lines, routers, splitters, bridges, hubs, protocols, LANs and WANs, just to name a few...
