Emerson's Self Reliance
Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay Self-Reliance, is one of the greatest motivational pieces of all time. Although, believing in yourself, refusing to conform and trusting your own judgement have now become modern-day cliches, a century and a half ago, such ideas caused an uproar among early American society. Although Emerson may come off as redundant in his essay, he is merely trying to emphasize his points as much as possible. He believed that the key to success in life was following your instincts and relying on yourself to get where you want to in life. Today many people still try to take Emerson's lessons to heart and follow them on a path of self-reliance.
One of the things that Emerson had in common with our modern American Dream, is the idea of everyone having an equal opportunity. According to the American Dream, anyone can be president, anyone can grow up to be a millionaire and anyone can live happily. All it takes is hard work and dedication in America to get wherever you want to go. Emerson agreed with that, but only if you were completely self-reliant could you accomplish such a thing.
