Since this year's sales decline 10%, the company would like to reduce costs. The discharge of Cynthia could be one of the alternatives; however, after consideration of advantages and disadvantages, the company should not dismiss Cynthia.
It's clear that the decreased sales don't come from Cynthia's fault since she is a file clerk in the accounting department and her main responsibilities which involve the accounting department's documents such as typing, short hand and which don't relate with marketing planning can't affect either increased or decreased sales. So the company shouldn't blame her for this sales drop. The decrease in sales might have been caused by more competitors in the market or the slow-growth economy. Therefore, the company should figure out what reasons affect the sales drop and solve the problems leading the unsuccessful year's sales rather than firing Cynthia.
Moreover, firing Cynthia is not the right solution to reduce costs since she earns an annual salary about only $27,000 which is not so large an amount of money that can increase the company' sales in the long run. If the company fires her, the company could save only $27,000 per year. Even though the company's sales dropped this year, it still gained the profit at about $1.5 million...
