East of Eden By John Steinbeck In the First part of the book the Hamiltons, a family built around the wise but unrealistic Samuel, who is an immigrant from Ireland and for some reason choose to live in Salinas California. He is a poor black smith that lives on a farm with his 9 children. Samuel, is looked up to by everyone in the community (until he died) I guess is viewed as one of the best people in the book. In the next chapter Steinbeck starts talking about the Trask family in Connecticut. Cyrus Trask was the leader of the family and a veteran of war. Cyrus's wife passed away after his first child, Adam, was born. One year later Cyrus got married again and had another son, Charles. Adam was thoughtful and quiet; Charles was an athlete who made fun of his brother. Cyrus wanted to make Adam a real man but left Charles basically alone. Cyrus always loved Adam more than Charles even though Charles gave up more for him. Charles grew very angry at Adam for this. Charles even tried to murder his brother. After Charlie failed Adam tells their dad that "He doesn't think you love him”. Next Steinbeck talks about Cathy Ames, a very pretty child who, likes to hurt people.
