Someone is trembling in fear because he is afraid of what society thinks about the actions he has committed. This character resembles a man, Dimmesdale, in the play, THE SCARLETT LETTER. He was involved in an affair that had the whole town talking. Dimmesdale is portrayed as a scared, frightened man who cannot make a decision about right and wrong. He is afraid to tell the truth about the affair, to admit that he committed adultery with a woman who was married, and to commit his life to Hester and Pearl. Adultery is cheating on a loved one with another man or woman. In the play, THE SCARLETT LETTER, Dimmesdale had an affair with a married woman, Hester, who cheated on her husband Chillingworth. Dimmesdale helped drive Hester away from her husband and even had a child with her.
