After reading the poem "Metaphors" by Sylvia Plath the meaning of the poem becomes quite obvious. Plath's use of "Metaphors" as the title of the poem is actually quite poetic in and of itself because, she only uses metaphors throughout the poem. Her poem is short, to the point and about a woman's perception of herself while pregnant, whether negatively or positively.
Sylvia Plath hints at the meaning of her poem "Metaphors" in the very first line "I'm a riddle in nine syllables." The whole poem is built on the principle of nine. She writes the poem in such a way that every verse is composed of nine syllables and the poem is also exactly verses long. She uses these very subtle techniques and all the metaphors within the poem to allude to the nine months of pregnancy.
The first verse "An elephant, a ponderous house." is subtle and does not give the meaning of the poem away until combined with the rest of the verses. The metaphors "A melon strolling on two tendrils...
