The movie “Thirteen Days”, a Rodger Donaldson film, is an extraordinary movie that keeps you hanging on every twist and turn from the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Kevin Costner plays the role of Kenny O’Donnell the Special Assistant to the President. He is portrayed as the protagonist in this film, kind of like a useful fly on the wall, a man free to be where the president isn't and think thoughts the president can't. In an epic struggle to prevent nuclear war president John F. Kennedy, brother and Attorney General Bobby Kennedy, and Kenny O’Donnell are faced with life threatening decisions. This historical movie begins with President Kennedy finding out that the Soviets have set camps in Cuba with about thirty-two 3 mega ton nuclear ballistic missiles, that could wipe out about 1,000 miles with only 5 minutes of warning if they were to be launched. The Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, states that the Russians are trying to show that they can do what they want and suggests that the U.S. should hit them air strike. Robert McNamara, the Secretary of defense, agrees with Rusk saying that they should strike before the missiles become operational which could be anytime after 10 to 14 days. President Kennedy is in a state of shock from all of this and tells Kenny to make sure non of the information gets out to the press, which means they can’t tell Pierre Salinger the Press Secretary. Kenny suggests to Kennedy to get the former Secretary of the State, Dean Acheser, opinion because he has had experience with the soviets. Acheser suggest that if they demand the Soviets to withdraw their missiles from Cuba, they will refuse and then the U.S will be able to order attacks and invade, but then the Soviets will resist be over then run and retaliate against Berlin and once they do that the U.S.
