Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story, "Rappaccini's Daughter," uses irony as well as symbolism as a fundamental basis for the story. Irony takes place throughout the story. There are four main characters and one main setting. Each character displays ironic qualities that are evident in their actions.
The story mainly takes place in an enchanted garden, owned by Dr. Rappaccini. The garden is compared to as the Garden of Eden. This comparison poses as an ironic innuendo later in the story.
