Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg Ohio" is a book filled with grotesque characters. The story "Hands" is a prime example of grotesque characters acting ignorant because of fear of trusting each other. There is an undertone of prejudice that is a result of their ignorance, fear, and jealousy. The story "Hands" is about a man named Adolf Myers. Myers was a passionate teacher with a close relationship with his students. Myers was mistakenly accused of engaging in pedophilia with his students. The town members become consumed in rage and run Myers out of town. When logical thought takes a backseat to ignorance, prejudice, fear, and jealousy people will always be hurt and ostracized.
Adolf Myers was driven out of town by fear of a mob that was afraid of him. It wasn't Myers who they feared, for he was a harmless, small, timid, quiet man...
