There are two sides to any theatrical production, the technical aspect, and the acting aspect. Although actors are the stars of most productions, the production would never occur if it were not for the technicians. Good composition brings harmony and contrast to a production. The six major factors of visual composition are Line, Dimension, Movement, Light, Color, and Texture. These interact as the composition takes place. They are all very important to get the desired the effect that the designer seeks. Line defines form; Dimension is the size or mass of form; Movement is the action of form; Light reveals form; Color modifies form; Texture is the tactile aspect of form. Lighting, from the beginning of theatre, has not been used for most of the time. It has only recently been that designers have been using light as one of their tools. The four main functions of light used in theatre today are intensity, distribution, color, and movement. Lighting brings a lot to the composition of a production. Line is the linear shape of the light beam, dimensional light can add a third dimension to once flat things, movement can be strong directional light rays or sequential arrangements of lights, color changes the dimension of form, and textured light creates a mood unlike any other visual aspect (Parker 378). The most used and easiest to control piece of lighting equipment is the ellipsoidal spotlight. The two major types of ellipsoidals are the axial quartz, and the incandescent.
