In Robert Browning’s “Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister” the speaker is a monk who is jealous of the character Brother Lawrence. The speaker blames Brother Lawrence for things that he did not do. The speaker also mocks Brother Lawrence, and tries to make him look as though he is not as holy as people think he is. The speaker tries to influence the readers to think negatively of Brother Lawrence. The reason he does this is because he is jealous of Brother Lawrence. The speaker is jealous of the attention that Brother Lawrence gets, and he feels like he should be getting all the attention.
