Pericles was born in Athens, Greece around 493 BC. He was the son of Xanthippus, a Greek war hero and Agrarista a descendent of Cleisthenes, the founder of Athenian democracy. Pericles also know as "the Olympian," he was called this because the people of Athens felt he was such a great leader and worthy of enshrinment with Zeus and other Greek gods and immortals on Mt. Olympus, the home of the Greek Gods. Pericles was a general and the most influential member of Athens governing council. The golden age of Athens was also known as the "age of Pericles," because he had dominated the life of his city and brought such wealth and prosperity to the Athenian people.
Pericles was born into a weathly aristocratic family and possessed an above average intelligence. Pericles received and excellent education the greatest teachers of the day.
