Propaganda is at its most effective when the general population is kept in fear and ignorance - what happens if you don't encourage people to dig deeper than just the explanations they're presented with?
Propaganda techniques (differing degrees of subtlety):
1. Use of stereotypes - smearing by association (remember when the Bush White House said that John Kerry "looked French") - constant repitition makes images almost impervious to real experiences.
2. Substitution of terms - "free enterprise" sounds better than "capitalism" - "Reds" rather than "communists"..
3. Selection of images and messages - active censorship or media self-censorship by a media that needs continued access to government and military sources - also, general source selection in seemingly 'objective' news decisions.
4. Outright lying.
