The novel Hard Times by Charles Dickens, is a very strong book with many hidden meanings. The characters of this story have very interesting names to fit with their characters position in life, and beliefs. Just one of those names is the school teacher who is named Choakumchild. There is more to this book than that though. Hard Times tries to get around the glorification of the Industrial Revolution that many of us are taught in grade school, and show us the effects that this time period had on many individuals, as well as the environment. Dickens had many "pet peeves", such as his feelings on the destruction of the environment, but the most important one for him, was his fight for the poor.
The novel Hard Times, much like A Christmas Carol, shows how the lower class was a better class of people than the upper classes. One of the most important themes in this novel is the purity, and goodness of the lower class. This can be seen very early in the book when we see Sissy Jupe at her home. She has this warm open heart that will never allow herself to believe that her father had left her there alone...
