A Complex Relationship
Relationships in general are very complex. As an outsider, it is hard to judge the precarious nature of the two persons involved. With the help of minor characters, it is easier to understand the true nature, morals, and values instilled in the roles of major characters. This is just the case with the relationship between Hotspur and Kate. As a reader, it is hard to get a visual of the characteristics Hotspur possesses without the role of his wife, Kate. The appearance of Kate, and the conflicts they endure, truly give a different perspective of Hotspur and the rational he uses to justify his actions in dealing with her, in addition, the conflicts he is dealing with during his everyday tasks.
It is apparent throughout "Henry IV" that Hotspur prides himself with being a competitive and ruthless. He must always be in control and is never wrongunder any circumstance. When Kate enters the play, these characteristics are no longer abstract to the reader, but become concrete. Hotspur has a restless temper, and is obsessed with the idea of gaining respect, honor, and glory from others, regardless of the circumstance...
