Last Sunday Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of the Socialist party was elected the new Prime Minister of Spain. His victory was a surprise as the Popular Party was expected to win easily. The Popular Party supported George Bush's War on Terror, while part of the Socialist stand was to remove Spain's troops from Iraq. A couple days before the election Spain was hit by a terror attack unprecedented in the country's history. Two hundred people died and hundreds of people were injured. Meanwhile, as Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the attack, there is much speculation as to the reason for the Socialist victory. Many people theorize that voters suddenly shifted their support to the Socialist party with the hope that terror groups such as Al Qaeda would not attack Spain again if Spain withdrew its troops from Iraq, thus, no longer taking an active role in the War on Terror. Thus, the article presents the question of who truly won this election: the terrorists (by having countries conform politically to their desire) or the Socialist party?
