As technology and society advances, formal letter writing is declining rapidly due to new and even past inventions. The declination of formal letter writing was caused and still is caused by four factors: the telephone, the computer, the instant message or the E-mail, and the internet. All of these innovations give people reasons to use other ways to communicate than through formal letter writing.
The immediate cause of the decline of formal letter writing was the innovation of the telephone. This advancement allowed people to simply look up a phone number and talk to someone in a different town. Today, you can talk to people in different countries and across oceans. With the telephone you could also contact someone more quickly than you ever could by writing to someone. There is no sense in writing a formal letter to your long lost cousin anymore, when you can simply pick up a phone and dial a number.
The next invention that blemished formal letter writing is the computer. Instead of writing out papers, people now type anything that needs "written"...
