"A Madman's Diary "
Lu Shuns "A Madman's Diary" is about a man who has woken up to the reality of his life around him and he believes the bad things are happening to him. The madman believes that people are going to eat him which I think means they are keeping him down and depressed and eating away at his soul until he just wants to die. Mostly over all the madman is a very sad depressed man who goes around complaining about life and how mean people are to him and such. The mad man is just afraid that his depression caused by the town eating his talent and mind and I think that is what the whole people eating him thing is supposed to mean. When he finally get a job I when he realizes he can't keep letting these people keep him down and kill all his motivation so he goes out and gets a job and tries to make him self once again a productive member of society. That is what this poem means.
Why this poem is about the madman's depression and troubles with his town people. The town wanting to eat Madman represents them making him depressed and unwilling to live because he doesn't really do anything but walk around town and sit in his home. For example how they say the Madman's brother ate the sister I believe that really means is the brother put her down and made her so depressed she lost the will to live and that is how the brother ate her away she just slumped off and died out of depression. I believe he comes out of the depression when he goes to work because he believes that he is not going to let his brother win over him like he did his sister so he built up the will power to go out and get a job...
