Private troubles and public issues are distinct in their nature (Mills 1959). The rising problems of child custody and tertiary education will demonstrate how they occur and affect at different degrees between an individual and a society. Moreover because of the rapid and overwhelming changes that occur within society, people feel trapped, unable to adjust their lives accordingly with the times. Even the accessibility to information and media still does not close the gap between the troubles felt by an individual and the issues that contribute to these feelings of entrapment.
"Troubles occur within the.individual and within the range of his immediate relations with others" (Mills 1959: 8). Take for instance child custody, fathers may feel that their relationship with their children is threatened due to limited visits with their children. Or as another example tertiary education, where some students balance work with their studies to make ends meet thus leading to pressure and stress-related troubles. However these troubles had to have originated beyond the "personal troubles of milieu" (Mills 1959: 8). Here we embark on the influences of public issues...
