THE CHANGE IN FAMILY STRUCTURE
While the Great Depression was a time of great economic disaster the impact it had on the American family social structure is just as devastating and important. The american family structure under went great change as a result of the great difficulties the Great Depression brought on families. The family structure did not improve throughout the 1930's, fathers who were seen as the providers and the heads of the household became
much more challenged as fewer and fewer jobs were becoming available. While the depression progressed more and more men were losing there jobs and this meant more men were out searching for jobs which made it incredibaly difficult to find one and the reality seemed that very few men were actually bringing home paychecks. The men of this period must have suffered much anxiety and the feeling of worthlessness for not being able to provide for their families.
1. While men found it difficult to find jobs women and children were increasingly becoming part of the labor force, I don't believe jobs were easier for women and children to obtain then men but I believe that there were jobs available for women and children that men simply did not want to accept or on rare occasions not qualify. Womens role in society was incresing during this period as more women were supporting families themselves. Women were becoming more independent and seeing themselves, as an excerpt from the reading says, the bosses of the families. Children's role during this period also changed since many of them had to get jobs to help support their families and the since many of these kids had to forfeit there paycecks to help support there families I believe the pressure and responsibility was just to great for them to handle and this caused many kids to rebel and even runaway from their families...
