Every person has a personality, that is, a characteristic way of thinking, feeling, behaving, and relating to others. Most people will experience some difficulties and problems that result from their personality. This often leads to a personality disorder. Personality disorders involve behaviors that deviate from the norms or expectations of their culture. Many of these personality disorders represent extreme variants of behavioral patterns. One example of this is Borderline Personality Disorder. This is marked by an unstable sense of self, distrust, impulsiveness, and self-destructive behavior. These symptoms usually encompass the difficulty in controlling anger and other emotions. Tonight, I will discuss borderline personality disorder in the DSM-IV, the causes of the disorder, the treatments available, and refer to the film Girl, Interrupted.
