A Doll House How can a silly, immature girl become a serious, sensible woman in less than two days? Well, Nora, in A Doll House manages to accomplish this. Some critics have argued that there is too big a change in Nora. I disagree because Nora has never lived alone and has never had a job. She is so simple minded that consequence has probably never entered her mind. Her fears of jail and family humiliation probably make her react more harshly than others may, but her sudden face with reality justifies her big change. Nora went immediately from the care of her father to that of her husband, Torvald Helmer. Torvald sees himself primarily as the breadwinner of the household and guardian of his fragile wife. He constantly calls her “lark” and “squirrel”, and he seems to think of her more as an entertainment purpose than an equal partner. The children spend little time with their mother and father, and they are basically raised by Anne, the family nurse.
