Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression. This illness includes spells of both mania and depression. Mania is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive irritable mood (Michigan Health System). Mania includes increased energy, activity, and restlessness. Someone who suffers from mania is in a good mood one minute and irritable the next. Depression on the other hand, causes feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, or emptiness. These symptoms of bipolar disorder are very serious. The severity can change anywhere from wrecked relationships to suicide.
