Interview Assignment This paper required me to interview both a manager, and an entrepreneur to learn about their roles. For this assignment I chose my cousin Derrick Burkes a manager at Buckle a clothing store in the Charleston Mall. And for my entrepreneur I opted to interview Mr. John Coates owner and creator of Urbanology a clothing store on Third Ave. here in Huntington. Both of my interviewee’s are out of the same industry but at totally different venues. Buckle is a National chain usually found in most malls and shopping centers. Urbanology is a self-created vision recently established here in the local Huntington area to provide a product not previously available in the area. I figured establishing a format for my interviews would serve as a good technique for when I would later have to make comparisons. So I decided that first I would ask both to list their top five most important duties, and rate them in order of importance from one to five, with five being the most important and one being the least most important. Then I asked them to also rate them again on a one to five scale based on how time consuming they thought the task was one being not time consuming and 5 being extremely time consuming. And finally I asked them what part of the position they liked the most and disliked the most. In my first interview I traveled to Charleston to visit with my cousin and find out exactly what being manager of a clothing store entails. The first duty that we discussed was (Five): “Taking corrective action in time of disturbance or crisis.” He states that making customers and employees happy is very important to a productive atmosphere; therefore, he always tries to handle disagreements in a relatively quick manner. He would like to think it is the least important of his top five duties based on the fact that good training and products knowledge skills are taught to employee’s and should make for less altercations. So based solely on that he rated this duty as a one on our time consuming scale. The next task on his list is (Four) “Providing information to subordinates in a timely and reasonable fashion.” He described several forms of information that he was required to provide to his subordinate employee’s, a few being: Product changes, sale information, new company policies, and schedules. He then rated this as a three on our time consuming scale stating that with technology this is not as time consuming as it was in the past. Next on our list of tasks is (Three) “Looks for improvement projects.” These projects include change of products, processes, procedures, and organization. Other ways to improve are cost reduction programs, and development of forecasting systems.
