Roles of the Mother vs. Roles of the Father

In the first half of Peter Pan, I quickly realized that there are many differences in the way the mother and the father are looked at through the children's eyes. These two figures have nothing in common as far as parenting goes, which is why the children see them in two different lights. Once making their way to Neverland, we see that Wendy takes on the role of the mother, while Peter takes the role of the father. How do the roles of the Darling parents relate to the roles of "mother" Wendy and "father" Peter?
It is not very hard, after reading the first half of Peter Pan, to decipher the two differing roles that the parents of Wendy, Michael, and John have taken, whether consciously or unconsciously. We first see the mother, Mrs. Darling, to be the idealized one of the two, who the children look up to and relate to in more ways than one.
