What Makes a Garden Grow
In this story I think that the children play a very important role. When the Giant puts up the notice board that "trespassers will be prosecuted", it is because he wants his beautiful garden all to himself. "My own garden is my own garden, said the Giant, any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but my self." (The Selfish Giant, p.250) The Giant didn't understand that the reason his garden was so beautiful was because of the children. The children's laughter and appreciation for what was growing is what kept it alive and well. You can't get something for nothing. You can't have a beautiful garden by neglecting it and depriving it of what makes it shine. Without the children, the garden wasn't able to grow anymore. After the Giant built the wall around the garden, it became cold and everything stopped growing...
