When people encounter the word welfare, they automatically think about unemployment. The unemployment rate in the US is now 6.4 percent, and it explains why millions of people are on welfare. In her article "Is There Life After Welfare", Annie Downey tells her own true experience of what it is like to be on welfare. She basically talks about how she "went from a teen mom [on welfare] to a woman with education" (202). She is angry toward the people who cannot accept her as a normal person, and she uses lots of sarcasm to express that anger.
Like many other unemployed mothers, Downey received government assistance. Welfare is a government program that is designed to help single mothers' families move out of poverty. How? By helping them find jobs, and facilitating their comeback into the society as a result...
