The first American colonies were the beginning of the history of the American people. They started the formation of the American government with simple documents like the Mayflower Compact. The first three colonies founded by the English were Roanoke, Plymouth, and Jamestown. These early colonies were all settled for strategic, logical reasons. The three colonies, Roanoke, Plymouth, and Jamestown, were very different and distinctive in many ways.
The first English settlement ever established in America was the colony of Roanoke. Sir Walter Raleigh wanted to launch an American colony that would contain the English, Native Americans, and Africans that had been saved from Spanish slavery, living together successfully. Roanoke was also a beneficial location for a military base against Spain. Even though Roanoke was well-funded, it was later concluded that in order for any colony to be victorious, it would have to be self-financed.
