The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the education system in creating negative images, and the harmful impact this has on the psyche of the black child. In this book review I will firstly state the problem, then expatiate on the impact it has on children of color.
In the book "Racism in American Education" written by William E Sedlacek and Glenwood C Brooks, the problem of racism is identified as the main set back for black kids trying to achieve an education. Due to the fact that whites are in control of everything including the education system, many types of racism, injustices and stereotypes do exist, which inevitably affects the black child. The authors main focus is to identify many of these problems and its damaging effects on the black child. Sedlacek and Brooks spent most of there time focusing on institutional racism, which by definition; are actions taken by a social system or institution, which results in negative outcomes for members of a certain group. They stressed that this type of racism mainly affect black children and are commonly found in elementary and secondary school levels
The first example of institutional racism displayed is segregated systems that keep blacks isolated in geographical pockets. As we read in the book 'Savage inequalities', there are no known school system in this country that does not directly or indirectly practice racism in this manner. Kozol asked the question,
"Will white children and black children ever go to school together in New York?"
The principal of Riverdale School sighed and said
"It would never happen, it's a dream that I will never live to see...
