The Right to Life
Not since slavery has an issue so completely entrapped and concerned American society, and perhaps posed such a moral dilemma. The debate over abortion is a conflict of modern times with two primary competing moral visions. Many believe that abortion is the practice of killing the weakest and most defenseless among us. While others believe that women have the right to choice what takes place in their bodies. Since the United States Supreme Court handed down the much-debated Roe v. Wade decision of 1973, some forty million abortions have been committed in this nation alone (Schwarz 149). This suggests that every one out of three pregnancies are terminated and deprived of the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which are all guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence. The most commonly debated issue over abortion is the question of when life actually begins. It is a common misconception that the unborn fetus is a mere blob of tissue that is entitled to no rights, when in all actuality, science has proven that it is in fact a living human being from the moment of conception.
