A Symbol of Heritage or Hate? We’ve all seen it before either waving in the wind in front of the state building in South Carolina or on the front or back of license plates of cars going down the highway. The Confederate Flag is a flag that represents centuries of mixed emotions as far as its meaning is concerned. Through the eyes of a person of color they view this flag as a symbol of slavery and oppression; however, through the eyes of a person of the Caucasian persuasion they view this flag as a symbol of heritage and honor. As for me, being a person of color, if I happen to stumble across someone who displays this flag on their personal property or I see it on TV I tend to view it as a lot of other people of color do; offensively. However there are people out there who feel as though the flag has been wronged in someway and should be defended. The Confederate Flag, I feel, is not what gets people of color in such an uproar when it’s displayed somewhere it’s the message behind the flag and the message that people who openly display the flag send.
