Primary pollutants are substances produced by a process, e.g. combustion of fuels, released instantaneously into the atmosphere. Secondary pollutants form in the air when primary pollutants react e.g. Ozone formed from NO2.

The major contributors to photochemical smog include NOX, VOCs and O3 and motor vehicles are largely responsible in giving off NOX, NOX, SO2 and hydrocarbons from motor vehicles react with sunlight to form secondary pollutants e.g. ozone.
