Many problems arose as these nine African American girls began attending Central High School in Little Rock Arkansas. Riots broke out, mobs attempted to hang them and teachers ignored other students' insults during class. The nine struggled through their year at Central High They were constantly harassed, tripped and even targeted with flying sticks of dynamite, but they had the will and dedication for higher learning. Forty years ago, when the US Supreme Court declared that school segregation was unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education, Beals was a schoolgirl in Little Rock. She knew that the good school in Little Rock, the one that would prepare her best for college, was Central High, and she wanted to be in the first group of black teenagers to integrate the school.
