Compare and Contrast of Caribbean Films
The two films Dance Hall Queen and The Harder They Come are very important to the culture in the Caribbean. These films depict life's struggles in the poor Caribbean and how the people try and make strides toward prosperity. Dance Hall Queen tells the story of a single mother who decides to start dancing in a dance hall at nights and runs a cart during the day. The Harder They Come tells the story of a man who is trying to live his life a singer but instead gets caught up in the life of selling drugs. The stories have some comparisons such as those of how hard it is to become prosperous in the Caribbean. They can also be contrasting stories because of the way that people can choose to become successful and the way music can impact someone.
Dance Hall Queen portrays the life of a street vendor named Marcia who struggles to provide for her family. Her household income depends on money she earns as a street vendor from selling soft beverages at the dancehalls. Also, a family friend named Uncle Larry helps out Marcia with gifts of food and money, but he wants to have sex with Marcia's 15-year-old daughter in return for his benevolence. Marcia wants a better life for her family and wants to keep her daughter, Tanya, away from Uncle Larry before he destroys her daughter's life...
