In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev composed Peter and the Wolf. ... Prokofiev also wrote the text for this tale and originally called it How Peter Outwitted the Wolf.
Peter and the Wolf is a story of a boy who displays courage, when he encounters a vicious wolf, by capturing it. Prokofiev wrote this piece and created images with sound as well as any painter could paint, or artist could draw.
“Each character of this tale is represented by a corresponding instrument in the orchestra – the bird by a flute, the duck by an oboe, the cat by a clarinet staccato in a low register, the grandfather by a bassoon, the wolf by three horns, Peter by the string quartet, and the shots of the hunters by the kettledrums and the bass drum. ... ” - Sergei Prokofiev
This composition is created with each character having its own theme which is systematically introduced one by one and is repeated through out the entire piece. It was an entirely new approach for Prokofiev because he designed this piece for young listeners, rather then adults. ...
Prokofiev took a child’s perspective when writing this. ... When it came to the wolf, which represents danger, he used a minor key and a devious sounding melody.
