The Hopis
The Hopi Indians lived in the southwest area of the United States dwelling in the northeast area of Arizona. They survived mainly on vegetable such as corn, beans and squash. The Hopis rarely ate meat because of the fact that there was not much wildlife in the area where they were living. Their homes were made of stone with the entrance on the roof and Kiva's, or religious chambers, in the underground of their homes. The Hopis believed that the creation of the earth and its people began with the sun god, Tawa, and the Earth Goddess, Spider Woman. They created earth between the Above, which Tawa controlled, and the Below, which Spider Woman ruled. They shaped animals and people from the clay and breathed and sang life into them. Each animal was instructed to lead different clans to areas where they will live. Each clan adopted the name of the animal that led them. Spider Woman told them that the women should be the land and house owners and shall cook and make baskets...
